It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood

Ken-away-4

“23d” has been found

Yes, I thought I’d give you another pic of this awesome project we put together almost 10 years ago now.  It’s in a new owners hands and the project will now go on.  Huge “one off” projects like that are never done… So many things are “first ever” it kinda like this…. I betcha Henry Fords first car didn’t run!  Howard Hughes flew the “Spruce Goose” once and to be honest it was ground reflection that was holding that thing up… Wazniacs first PC looked like.. actually WAS a high school science project and so it goes with “first time” things that are dreamed up and put together by people that just won’t let go.  That’s what “23d” was.  An awesome looking testosterone pumping badd ass 23′ of the planet.  I figured in billed and unbilled labor and parts there was over $225,000 investing in making that hunk of steel live.  Hey, that’s what it takes if you truly want something different.  The new owner is showing pics on Facebook, go take a looksee…

One of the great things about my job is we’ve gathered a bunch of really talented people who about live outside the box and I can get them together and have them do things they really love to do.  Morning at the shop, the sun is rising, the automatic flood lights are still on, Hank just pulled in with his Bronco.. a set of AC gauges over his shoulder heading to the gate that’s open already because Kevin, Hanks brother and my painter for over 16 years is already at work under flourescent lights sanding still thos bumpers.  Hers’s Hank Hank-coming-in-2 and here’s Kevin now turning his attention to the rear bumper and smoothing out to 330 the receiver hitch opening Ron-bumpers-9  He may be fitting the rear bumper and hitch after doing some mods to the hitch Ron-bumpers-10

This next one you simply will not believe.  I accepted this machine… well because it was free AND I and others around here have always wanted to do something like this.  This is off GMC but I think it will at least be entertaining to you AND at least be about a motorhome…. I’m of course talking about Miss Piggy  and what to do with a 37′ front gasser big pig of a motorhome that’s seen it’s better days no doubt  Miss-piggy-5  I mean it doesn;t look that bad.. right?  Well look at another angle and at the way it’s butts lokks like it needs to find a hole Miss-piggy-1  This is a 1989 (won’t mention the brand anymore) 37′ motorhome.  A 65,000 mile Chevy P-30 extended chassis with Goodyear stabilizer rear axle but man she’s had a rough life and when water invaded it’s walls well, you can see what happened.  I thought I had seen and understood the plight of this rolling home but this shocked even me!  We want to remove the body to reviel the chassis so we started hacking away with a sawsall  Miss-piggy-7, we got in but it was kinda slow work.  I called our dumpster diver guys who we funnel scrap and gave them the body to cut off…After about 4 hours they gave up too Miss-piggy-9  he said “Ain’t no metal in them walls”.  Then it hit me, I ask one of my guys to bring in his sone, a strasping youngster.. I asked him, do you have anyone you are mad at right now?  Well go in that coach and kick the walls pretending it’s them.  3 hours later take a look.. he kicked all the walls down leaving only the framework Miss-piggy-13 He kicked out the roof and all the walls.  There is 1×1″ square channel vertical supplorts every 8′!  Yes, I just went out there to step it off!  Miss-piggy-12  Blow up that that pic, every square inch of metal was rusted badly.  I think there might be more structure in the nosecone but the main stucture of that was crap Miss-piggy-11 but the rest of it seems to me to be dangerous.  Guys THIS is why you want to look at getting a vintage GMC motorhome.  Oops, we’re not comparing “apples to apples”, this is a 1989 motorhome!  Lemme say that again a 1989 motorhome with 65,000 miles!  I rest my case your honor…

A GMC actually has a bodyframe section apart and it will stay together on it’s own!  The RV industry of the past was just a sales driven world… bigger, more stuff and all that…  I think that horse is dead, we have some plans for the chassis… stay tuned.

“Elvis.. has entered the building”  This morning all the sealant has cured and there wasn’t anything left to do but put it on David-awning-9  This a a ZipDee “New Century” electic remote automatic awning with a 10′ canopy David-awning-7  Here’s a pic Brian took of me taking that shot.  Man, that was a pile of work!David-awning-11

OK, it’s 9am and I need to get going.. the guys are here and we’re on it.  Se ya tomorrow…
