GMC Motorhome, Sprucing up a 5 year old full restoration

You can read more about “Sport Billy” on my gallery page on the site, @ 5 years ago the coach was a custom build to super tailgate spec..  No expense was spared to make this machine stunning and the place to be at a tail gate party.  kent-finals-45

kent-dash-done-3  kent-av-system-1-1

So the machine was completed and over the past 5 years it’s done it’s duty.  Kept in doors…. the coach changed hands and was trailered from Baton Rouge to us here in Orlando  danny-here-1  Man… look at how it looks even after being away 5 years…. it was kept well.  danny-here-10  danny-working-2  Perfectly kept  danny-here-9

ready for it’s next adventure with Adrian P. in New York.

The coach is now in hover mode while every mechanical aspect is being checked… a baseline on all fluids and filters… new rear brake spring kits if the originals were reused.  This is something I have found MUST be changed on a vehicle of this age  danny-working-1  At the same time, the tires were of course 5 years old and though the tread was exposed to maybe 3000 miles they have to be changed.  Here I’m truing then balancing his 6 with American Eagle rims and new tires

danny-truing-5  danny-truing-1  With a drum off…oops, looky there… a spring had broken  danny-working-11  Nathen is prepping all the wheels for new spring and hardware kits, shoes are close to 50%.. they are cheap… a new inner bearing seal and repacked bearings with Valvoline synthetic grease  by the guys today  danny-working-12See what I mean?  5 years ago this coach had all new brake components, the coach was driven only to tail gate parties and was actually trailered back to us but in that 5 years there are some pretty serious brake issues!  We now… not then but now completely change out all the spring, hardware and adjuster components.  Man, it was a good thing they did not elect to drive it here.  Guys…. if you open your drums up, install new springs and stuff in there.  One 40 year old part goes away and you can be on the side of the road!

If your brakes work today… great… but will they do that tomorrow…. YOU need to know that!  Stay tuned as we get into Sport Billy a little more.  Oh yeah, before leaving brakes… today, or SOP is to replace the original combination valves (also known as meter valve, combo valve, etc….  whatever you wanna call it, it’s 40 year old rusted steel….. I mean WHAT could go wrong?  We now replace every one with an all new brass combination valve… you just don’t know.. one of those metering jets rust up.. clog up or whatever and there you are…combo-valve-3  $89 new.  Also note that valve didn’t go down without a fight, one steel line rusted to the valve so expect to replace a steel line or 2 removing a part like this…….  Hey, it’s what they do…

So Adrian, you already have the bad ass coach of the planet… now you will be able to drive it too!  Stay tuned for more….

Guys, I gotta go… lost a mechanic yesterday… stinks but we can’t build this place on folks you can’t count on.  2 steps forward….. 1 step back but hey the beat WILL go on…  See ya later….
