GMC Motorhome: Ruby’s dash and of course more

NO, that’s not all we’re doing around here!  It IS first on my mind right now but as everything goes on, the guys are still pumping out product.  This 23′ Birchaven is going out today 12.12.17 morning 5 Knowing this coach well over 10 years, the new owners understand bringing the coach back on it’s maintenance curve and new, more reliable stuff….. a pile of parts were taken out and replaced 12.12.17 morning 4 Of course this work has to be within a financial budget but unfortunately the condition of the coach tells us what is needed.  We’re breaking up work first in the “#3″ must do stuff first…. It’s still sporting 16.5” tires but with the tires still in date that inevitable expense can wait.12.12.17 morning 3We feel it’s now reliable to use for short runs to get some use out of the coach.  When there’s more budget other optional things can be addressed.

We’re deciding if this coach can go home after not only going after the #3 important issues but also some #2 optional things.  Their fresh water tank was nasty, cracked and seeping 12.12.17 morning 2After being replaced, the old tank ends up a makeshift table (you know, it seems like ANY horizontal surface around the shop seems to end up a table with stuff on them) ..so moving over the dash AC seal kit….. we’re putting the dash AC system together today…. you can see the residue line where the nasty old sender was leaking 12.12.17 morning 1 The tank would hold what @ 1/2 tank of water… over that it leaked.  This would be considered a #2 issue.  I mean you CAN use the coach… just not much fresh water…. and don’t drink that crap!

Both recent purchase coaches are going different paths……. both are fine as long as you know your main assets are solid.  This is how you deal with limited finances…. do it in stages because trust me, there are things NO ONE knows are in need to work!  It’s just what you find in a 40 year old man made machine…. thank goodness we don’t have a wood frame like most RV’s of the day were made of….. still your coach will tell you when you’re done…… just sayin….

OK, Ruby took the attention of several people yesterday.

Our next step in discovery is the under dash enclosure for the heat/cool unit.  Here is the unit in place Ruby dash build 50 First decision is material selection……. what else, we need to use aluminum Ruby dash build 56 A new sheet, sheered to size Jared pulled out his sheet metal expertise… WhamBam….. we have an opening box to spec.  Ruby dash build 55 We will now make 5 of these and document it with patterns.  OK…. and here’s the BIG pic….. here is the unit, in place enclosed by it’s serviceable aluminum box Ruby dash build 54 and with sealed cover on   Ruby dash build 53  Wow, look at all that clean room under there!  Ruby dash build 52

That’s it!  This will work!

But STOP…don’t call yet to get on the schedule and don’t ask this yet….. How much?  We’re not there yet, now the discovery on how everything will come together stants and even after one is done we have to do several to understand how to reproduce it again.  Please understand adding this great dash AC option, a complete front electrical system rewire and as complete dash refurbish is suggested to amiterize the cost of what it takes to do all of this….. Translated?  This is not any “easy” process and you really don’t want to learn how to do something like this for the first time…. on your coach!  Hey, you do all the things you do to make a living, let me make a living doing this project time after time…….. the end product will cost you less… most certainly less stress and completed NOT being your best… but first time doing it.  Yes…. this is what we do for folks, it’s not just full restorations but it’s also important updates like a refinished electrical system, a cosmetic update AND updated features… GPS speedo, calibrated gauges, cleaned up wire wads…. new LCD screen AV systems, backup cameras, blue tooth…….all of this new stuff we love AND a kick butt dash AC… so what’s all that worth to just get done….al of it?  See, that’s how hard it is to answer that “how much” question.

If you like your coach, if you want it to be not only reliable but also comfortable… here’s how to make the work end of your fun machine….. more fun!  5-dashes-Don-3  5-dashes--scott-16 You know…. spiff it up a bit.  Now I am not saying everyone needs to do this… no, the whole thing will not be cheap and in a kit….. there’s more labor and specific knowledge that makes it all work… along with the right parts….  Remember the operative phrase when working on a GMC Motorhome………

“It almost fits perfect”

So it’s onward and upward……. some of you will be mad at me for saying what I just did…… look, if you want to do it have at it and I will help you all I can but really……. do ya wanna clean all THIS out?  Sheppard AC 2. Sheppard AC 3 which BTW is the 3rd dash AC project I’ll be doing.  A “club coach” Sheppard AC 4  now with a new owner wants to clean this up a bit   Sheppard AC 1  It’s a Mac dash and it all works…. how, no one is quite sure but it was all done with love so we’ll need to give a little more love to straighten things out …….. if you have a coach like that….. stay tuned….

Gotta go, the 23′ delivery is at 10:30, there’s a strang Palm Beach out front with people in it…… Hmmmm  Let ya know………
