GMC Motorhome: Ruby, they used liquid nails on that TOO!

So in the 1973 model coaches, the interior outfitter (Gemini) installed a one piece headliner  JayGee-looks-back well I say one piece, there was a plastic drop down ceiling in the hallway.  You say bummer but noooooo, they were very smart, that is a Passover point where wires, pipes and other such stuff you want to run from one side to the other of the coach could be hidden!  Brilliant!  In fact that gave them the confidence to say “we will never need to drop the headliner….. lets glue it up?  Hey Bubba, what’s the stickiest stuff we can find that will stict this fiberboard to that ceiling?……… I got it… Liquid Nails!!!!  I just glues some jiffy dark woodgrain paneling to a concrete wall…. that’ll do it……..

And so that’s what they did… I’ll tell ya this……. it will never come down in one piece, the headliner in my 1973 beauty JayGee-glamour-1 was roll painted by the last owner and as you saw looks pretty good!  So I’m not sayin that was a bad thing, I’m just saying after this long man, I’d sure like to replace that swollen fiberboard….. but anyway that’s not what I wanna have fun with today on Ruby’s behalf…… this coach you have already seen, was bubble gummed together by the finest engineers at GM trying to figure out how to make this thing!  Well lemme tell ya a story and I’ll start off by saying I could be wrong so I’m covered… but it seems to me…..

2 Gemini interior installers talking:  Hey Scooter, get back here and help me figure out what to do with this bullcrap rear cap GM put in this thing.  What in the hell can we stick this groovy interior we’re putting in to this plastic curved piece of crap?  Oh, BTW… this would have been a conversation with guys building an interior AFTER Ruby here…. remember Ruby’s rear cap was in 4 hand made pieces when I took it apart   Ruby headliner 2….No… these are guys working on. this cap I pulled from another 1973 model somewhere around 1500 Ruby headliner 16 Oh but look closely at the headliner…. and lets keep the story going…… Hey Bubba, use thast same crap we used on the headliner… I’ve got a couple of tubes left!  Here put it on….. No… that’s too much, do it like this.. this stuff really holds… remember in the Movie “The Blues Brothers”  The stuff held down the gas pedal of that Winnebago…… hey, that good nuff for me!  But put in on the next one like this  Ruby headliner 14 You don’t need to waste time doing that loopy stuff, just put 2 lines and letrgo!  And so it was, this could be another historical find, when Bubba taught Scooter how to properly apply liquid nails!  Ruby headliner 16  However it happened, I now have to figure out how to get a 40 year cured adhesive off of a soft, textured ABS thin, vacuum formed panel!!!!!!!

So I get this Email from Cedric in the UK.  Ruby is his family member now and he said “looks like I’m having too much fun… wish I could be there…” Oh Brother where art Thou…….. this is gonna be more fun than getting you arm stuck in a vending machine!

And who was worse…… Bubba or Scooter?  lets see…..  Nope, can’t sand it… the ABS being softer than the liquid nails is wearing off first!  Awire wheel on a high speed rototool?  Ruby headliner 13 Hope, that eats the plastic faster.  What to do……… I know, our mechanics have to get some pretty cruddy things off….. Hey Phillip whatchgot?  Ruby headliner 17 No sorry, in your world if it doesn’t work torch it but ya got anything else?

Here we are now… Buddb and Scooter… trying to figure out how to get this “crap” now OFF!  OK….. necessity is the mother of invention……. we can use our heads or our back…….. Phillip had the tool and gentlemen, you can write this down as how to get 40 year old liquid nails off of 40 year old thin, brittle ABS plastic. Here is is and get one of these  Ruby headliner 12

That tool has the angle for maximum pressure and minimum damage and I tell you accept no substitutes because I have every scraper harbor Freight has to offer and NOTHING took off all that glue like that gasket scraper and 3 blisters I got scraping every mm of that “crap” off!  Ruby headliner 11  We had already planned in retexture coating the front and rear caps anyway…. I just needed to get a surface to this smoothness Ruby headliner 10 We did and Cedric will have another story to tell taking a holiday in his Ruby.

Like I said… I could be mistaken but the last part was all true!

If you’re walking away still wanting more… me too, here’s some OTHER stuff we did yesterday:

One of the best times in my day is the morning… I’m one of those insufferable early risers….. I get in before daylight, flip on the lights to this place and just wander around remembering the day before and what’s gonna blow up today.  It’s really quiet and this time of year perfect weather … well it’s just a highlight of my day.. and then I see if I can tear it up from there….. every morning….. it’s great.  So to keep us sane I’ve always show u little silly things like this, our “pit bike built” by one of the guys  2017 motobike 1  It’s noisey, smokes, rattles and only has 1 brake… what a blast!  When my knee goes out…. you remember THAT back then we made this scooter so I could fool “Google Fit” in my phone…. 2017 motobike 2 and Oh, BTW… that’s not just ANY red duct tape holding that seat on… It’s certified “nuclear Duct Tape”  as you can see neucular duct tape Thank You to an actual guy who would use that stuff…. GMC owner of course who gave it to me…. I will always cherish it!  Think of it, a red neck with a roll of nuclear Duct Tape…….. “I can fix it!”

Anyway the 57 Belair stretch is all but done and man, am I glad! 57 finals 3  It’s been a 2 year project on the the INTERIOR alone!  Yeah, one of those stupid labor forever projects!  57 finals 1  But hey, another one of those impossible machines is about on the road….Wow, what a cool ride!  57 reboot 18  We figured out how to take apart those lighted, vanity Cady fuzzies to recover them  57 finals 6  They were heat bonded together… took another specialty tool for that job  57 finals 5  Door panels are on but we need to figure out where these custom arm rests should go  57 finals 8  Hey, a tough decision… turn the handle.. the arm rest low or hi…. it’s sooooo confusing!  Welcome to my world!

So look, people DO ask me why I do all this bout every day…… I’d have to answer therapy.  Over the past 20 years doing all this I have made it through all sorts of challenges and now finding something to do that folks appreciate well, I guess letting things out like this is my way of staying sane… if that’s what this is!  Anyway, this is a fun job… I hope to do this many more years…. all of it…… the team we now have… hey it’s not me.. I have to tell you something like this could only happen with a team!  Win, loose or draw THIS is a good thing to do…… Thanks

Pretty mushy.. sorry but it this is something you enjoy.. oh now I’m sounding like NPR!  No, we have many things going onaround here… one we started last year was “Motorhome Rehab Ranch”.  We wanted to offer videos on all sorts of things we do around here thru Patreon.  And we got a pile out there… some filtered somehow to UTube but all in all I think we were all having fun with that until they changed the format which made it all but impossible to get to the free video stuff without enduring all kinds of crap I know nothing about!

Well, I’ve got a new guy on the team trying to reformat and reset that marketing arm…….. We’re rebooting soon 2 things

Mototrhome Rehab Ranch and “Lifeismorethanmpg.com”

We’re gonna get those back and make those stops worth going too.  Thanks for your support in the past…… stay with us …..Hey, hold my beer………
