Cedric and family have been patiently waiting for this day …. “Ruby” their 1973 GMC has been into mechanical getting a Hum V 6.5 diesel drive train, it’s been in paint
getting it outside ruby shoe colored
and since has been inside waiting for us to get jiggy with the interior
Now, on to the main event, Ruby’s interior needs a few things the front needs love too but relief will start in the back. First though, being a 1973 AND having a production number of 41
the generator and LP compartments were stick frame built out of wood. Yeah, kinda scary and would leak exhaust fumes from the generator! You guys with a 73-74, be sure your generator compartment is sealed toght to the inside. OK, so here we are, no backend in Ruby
Out of the back lot in our pile of pure “Unobtanium” , Danavan found a pair of late model fiberglass generator and LP enclosures
Cleaning those up Ruby won’t have any problems…..
If I’m working in here it’s got to be clean! Wiping off 44 years of grime sure is fun! The upper pillar is clean, the lower not so much yet! Some other things to conside, the LP and generator compartments both need to be raised to the full height of the door……. here is the LP compartment lifted the thickness of a 2×4
How bout that…. original water tank straps….. we want the inside tall to accommodate the taller LP take out tanks. The generator will be the Kubota marine diesel unit and bringing it up high is a good thing. The last diesel generator we installed could not be raised because of the already finished interior
We can lift the compartment a full 8″ from original generator compartment
the flat area against the wall at the top can be taken off and lift the compartment to the horizontal aluminum bar.
With those installed and sealed the dedicated bed frame will go in Stay tuned for more on Ruby……. I’m doing this interior myself! Can’t wait!
Each time you see “Ruby” in the title, bookmark it, I know one person does!
As I build this interior watch and Email questions as I go. Each piece yields to the next….. the most useless tools in this work is a level and square…. everything is …cut/ fit/ cover/ install/ trim out…… one piece at a time! We’re using the vacuum form vinyl cover process in this interior so watch carefully….. nothin up my sleeves…. presto!! Well, not that fast but I’m on it so as we say in the southern vernacular “hey you’all.. watch this”…….. .
