GMC Motorhome, a visit to Pinellas Power Products

Morning guys, lemme process a few pics of an emergency surgery on a Honda EV-6010 plus a couple other things.  Yesterday I was the EMT transporting our patient so my day was crazy.  Get some coffee, gimme a few to get these pics where I can show you stuff and I’ll be right back…

—————————————————————

Alrightythen….  Here we go…

Before giving you a report on the emergency heart surgery of that sick Honda generator, I wanted to show you a few things on my morning crank up of the shop.

In that our diesel projects are occupying most all of our new mechanical area including our lift….. this is proof we need at least 1 maybe more lifts….. We’re doing suspension work on 2 coaches in the bullpen stroll-6.15.16 Looks like I’m in the hold of some big ship with only the middle string of lights on.  The white coach has some front bearing movement…. problem though, the coach is fitted with the “Wallace 3 bearing knuckle”.  A high dollar upgrade back in the day, the idea was 3 bearings is better than 2…. problem is there are no 3 bearing sets that are actually perfectly the same when it comes to bearing tolerances.  Cool idea but Mr. Wallace passed away some time ago and no one picked up supporting the remachining needed for the modified hubs and knuckles.  In other words, this system cannot be relied upon and serviced.  Also in other words, we have some work to do….

The other coach came in the carb would not allow the motor to idle without keeping the revs up… the rear wheels were smoking as it came up.   “Capt, we have a siruation…..”  Not only that but….. as a couple of you out there aware know that you can’t put 2 larger shoes on one drum morning-6.15.16-2  The guys found this as they installed a new wheel cylinder… the old cylinder seals were leaking.  You can see this by pulling open the dust boot on the wheel cylinder.  Do that… see fluid and know the seal is leaking morning-6.15.16-6 and then to top it off….. original rounded shoulder rear brake hoses morning-6.15.16-1Brother this puppy gave it all up and needs a new set of brakes….. everything…..  tell ya what though and I’m so proud of Junior… he got ALL of the steel fitting loose on the combo valve, master cylinder… which BTW was loaded….. and on the calipers and rear wheels…… a home run, first I’ve ever seen…. this is going to be a great project….. stay tuned.

OK, so lets get on to the saving of a Honda EV-6010.  A customer had picked up one of those awesome water cooled Honda generators and brought it to us to install into his GMV we were working with.  Cool…. and I’m glad you found what looks like a good one running well Jim-gen-7  As good stewards, we changed out the fan motor… first part to wear out in these things and what the heck, lets give her some new lungs… we installed a new carb.  Hey, it’s good insurance.  Installed it and fired that mother up … new Honda muffler, plumbed solid and wham… we have power!  5 by 5…. clean power, solid run, fires right up..

THEN….. owner came to pick it up…. the starter started smoking……  Yep… welcome to my world, that starter never showed any issues till the smoke came out and you geniuses know when you let the smoke out of anything it stops working!  Everything then runs on smoke… right?  Just kidding of course but the starter died but better than that it stated leaking oil…..FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE GENERATOR!!!  Holy crap, it’s the main bearing or at least something deep inside the bowls for the patient!!!!   Quick… call PPP….. that’s Pinellas Power products…. put the Honda in the back of my Suzuki, I’m on a mission!  PPP is in Brooksville 70 miles away.   The owner got a room for the night and at 8am yesterday I had the patient on the operating table  PPP-visit-6.14.16-19… Dr. Paul ready to go in. PPP-visit-6.14.16-18   Let me tell you, if you have issues with your Honda generator THIS is the place to go and to me 70 miles is a short run to get this level of service.  When a man starts a nechanical job the first step is to size up what needs to be done and the tools you will need.  No… I’m wrong, a true professional has his tools on one side, the job on the other and he goes for the first 1 tool he will need BEFORE even looking at the patient!  Professional!

And in a flash, the generator was separated WITHOUT lifting any more than 5 pounds!  Using overhead electric hoists, levitating tables and a clean room you just done see.  This “heavy mother” is hanging seemingly weightless from an overhead trolly with an electric wench.  PPP-visit-6.14.16-11.  I feel like maybe I’m in Willie Wonkas chocolate factory things wizzing through the air and everything squeaky lean.  Now we see the bell housing deep inside the mo\tor… oh look oil splash… we’re in the right direction PPP-visit-6.14.16-16  into the parts cleaner PPP-visit-6.14.16-14  Oh look, the oil splatter is surrounding the oil pump PPP-visit-6.14.16-13  Inside the pump it’s big seal is flat PPP-visit-6.14.16-12  removing the plastic oil pump gear getting into the small inner seal and there it is  PPP-visit-6.14.16-10  Both seals flattened out and were where the oil was coming from PPP-visit-6.14.16-2  Repair parts are cheap, LABOR TO GET TO IT AND HOW TO GET TO IT IS WHAT YOU PAY FOR.  The man is worth his salt… Generator back together

PPP-visit-6.14.16-6  PPP-visit-6.14.16-3 by the master then put onto his checkout stand for a 30 minute test run PPP-visit-6.14.16-1  Brought out to the car on it’s cart and now for a mad dash back to Orlando for reinstallation into the coach to get on home to Atlanta.  The patient had a full recovery …. fired up in the hole and pumped out power like the champ it is.

Paul at www.pinellaspowerproducts.com is who to call.  He makes us look that good.  Tell him Hi for me if you give him a call… do what he says, buy the parts from him and you will not be unhappy.
