One downside to this business has been seat tie for me and getting more involved with the GMC community. You might call me a huge enthusiast in that changing my profession from consumer electronics to restoring old RV’s you should expect to see me whenever a hood goes up one one of these and left to my own devises that would be true but then there’s that pesky work we are all tethered too until we retire…. yes that ole job, that thing you do between vacations that allows you to HAVE a vacation at all. Some of us poor working stiffs actually mark off on the garage wall how many days until you won’t have to “make the donuts”. Hey and I don’t begrudge you folks out there that are in recline mode in fact pardon me if I take some notes … but here you guys come to the shop… we have some laughs and cries getting your dream machine back to it’s former glory… as you can… and then woosh…. you take off, like a bird taking off from a secure limb because there just wasn’t any other reason to sit there……………. I’m still sitting there on that fix it limb with the next puppy in need of a bath comes in. Yep, you have the fun and I’m there working, hey but don’t feel so bad for me cause I’m doing what I’ve always wanted too and in my book and others… that’s retirement!
I don’t have a country club membership and am always wanting to know the time whenever I wake up. It’s like firing up a magnetic gimble after pulling it out of the box and wiring it up….. Woah.. I’m on, where are we going and why am I in this handbasket…… my day is set. Not having that happen to me would be weird and some call that retirement… and yes it is but I always need to be doing something and after 23 years of doing this… I do feel I can help someone. Can’t make everyone happy, they seem to be caught in the mix up between doing something you really want to do and have with what it costs to have it. Hey, it’s valid for some but just less important than the relationship made with others as they experience their dream. This is not a money making business as much as it’s a passion business. You pick up one of these vintage machines not because you were mandated.. someone made you or you have to have one because of your business…. well except me… no, this has to be a passion or yeally, it’s just another thing and as the poet laurite George Carlin used to preach…. the reason we have bigger houses, suit cases and garages is because of all the stuff we want to have around us. This motorhome can’t be just some of the stuff you own… it has to be about more than that and you should seek and support others that have a like feeling. THAT’S an enthusiast group and THAT’s what having one of these crazy things should be about. All the politics, the posturing, blaming others because of your expectations, your feelings on issues….. your, your, you…. IT’S NOT ABOUT U, IT’S ABOUT THE MOTORHOME GUYS!
Clubs always have a strong element od social interaction but when that the main reason for the group, it’s now a social event and God knows we have enough of those. We all are very different, that’s the way of the world but the one thing that brings all of us together is the fact that we think old motorhomes are neat. Guys, ask your neighbors, that’s a huge distinction and that’s what get togethers need to have as a big focus.
It’s exciting to see more of the long formed GMC specific clubs are embracing that. You may remember that still, the GMC specific clubs make up the largest group in FMCA. They may picture all those huge machines with slideouts, diesels and basement storage but the GMC Motorhome still has more follower clubs than anyone. Pretty cool and that’s the thing that makes us stand out.
So it’s first awesome for me to get away from “my work” and get out for some seat rime and it’s also great to get away with a pile of people who all drank the same punch…… and that happened for me this weekend and I tell you it’s wy I’m here today! A business is viable because they have or can do something that folks need. And it’s great to be able to do that with something I see as a great pastime. I trule feel blessed with where I am in this life and am excited over working with you with your coach but I also do this because I too enjoy my motorhome..
This weekend Janie & I got a …2fer… could have been a 3fer but we couldn’t get away in the middle of the week. Thursday night having a contingent from the Dixielander rally stop by and plug in at the new shop was awesome, thanks guys for dropping by . and then catch up with them and more like minded GMV owners in Ormond and get to drive our beauty for over an hour… which BTW, gave me a whole list of stuff I need to work on …. still it was fantastic to get out for a ride with 2 of my favorite people… Janie and JayGee.
THAT was a highlight for me! Of course seeing things and enjoying friends was part of it too like Janie taking a pic of a really big tree with John & Nancy D.
And then there was the seeing folks I hadn’t seen in a while
Of course this is part of the experience but never forget it’s about the GMC Motorhome.
There’s Stick M. Wanderlodge but make no mistake, we are all here for the GMC’s.
So here we are at the shop, it’s a Monday and we’re doing what we do and like best. Come on by and lets see if we can have some fun with your baby. See ya tomorrow….
