(Tuesday’s Updates below) YES, you CAN clean up your original cast iron concave intake manifold on tour 455 motor….. For sure…….

……..don’t throw money against the wall on this…… even though you could afford it.  That’s not the situation…… Follow me on this:

There is a unique situation having to do with the exhaust crossover going through our original 455 Olds motor.

GM was proud to announce their new Motorhome was quality designed for a 14 year viable use……..45 years ago!  And the dang thing WAS a rocket sled for that timeframe.

That was the past, here we are today.  Tearing into these critters like we’re doing we find nuggets of understanding how age is effecting the GMC.  There’s no president foe ANY name made vehicle to continue doing its job this long…..well aircraft but they must have FAA maintenance schedules and mandated updates.

One huge issue that actually is a timer to failure for your motors.  And 403 motors are also vulnerable.

I field call every week about this situation.  You may have read and listened to many opinions on this intake manifold issue……lets start with the truth……

(Updates start)……………

Why is this even something to talk about?

To stuff that monster 455 under the hood of a Toronado…..the base of the carburetor is below the top of the head…..yes, the carb is tucked down between the heads.  Check it….. out on your motor.

Bending the hot exhaust gasses to reach side to side the cast metal intake manifold really heats up at its middle.  This differential heat situation eventually will case the dreaded crack we are referring to.  It’s not “check it”….no, it’s there and if it’s not there……it will when you are least expecting.

Brother you need to get behind this situation.  How?  Here is an old original cracked intake.  It’s actually out of a 403.  Zoom in on the carb mounting plate you can just make out the crack…… So clean the intake up, we have it magnafluxed to be sure there aren’t any more  cracks….if there is NOW you need to get a different intake….if not everything will turn out just fine…….

Update stops…..ill be back……

You’re gonna hate me for this but hey, this is my “recovers day” off.  I have a few things to do…. I’ll be back later today.  I’ll have Janie remind me……

Ok, enjoy your Friday, I’ll get back here later on this…..

(Last update here)

See that…….here it is Tuesday, it’s taken me this long to get back…..sorry.

So Sunday out with Eleganza went well.  I lead her off the leash now at our spot out in Narcoosseeone thing about living at the shop on concrete she keeps her toe nails ground down but she loves to roll around in tall grassrolling in the grass is something she misses.

…….Another project moves out of our Q.  This 23′ ex- ambulance has it suspension now sorted out with new rear suspension pins and bushings, a full replacement brake renew, a Quad bag rear suspension and a 3 way flush and bleed.   There’s a tranny pan leak…..probably was not sealed up well and this puppy will be going home to get its interior finished off

So it’s out of the big house under its own power and over to the lift for the tranny pan investigationshould be ready to go home today……….Motor testing time with the Mutcedes a fresh motor needs to prove its worth.  We mount any fresh motor or transmission into our modified 1976 now rear engine 45SL convertible for a real world drive test.  Yes, tagged and titled, our Olds drive trains are put through their paces BEFORE the 30+ hour motorhome installation process can begin.  We MUST know all is good before we throw the considerable work to stuff it all into the coachso the Mutcades should be buttoned up and ready for the road test today……stay tuned………

Yeah so it’s taken a weekend to get this post up…..such good weather down here it’s hard to stay focused!  So we’re here now….. The Dream is alive……..we want to make sure of that…….see ya later

……..
