The Co-op: Wow, storage!

and I mean STORAGE!ftom east to west, its amazing what you pickup when you pitch the LP tank and generator.  This part of the project done Its on to working on the dedicated bed platform inside……..but man, it’s like those “basement” storage bins on the mondo rigs!So yeah, here I am again….L and me just watching the sun rise over the back fence…..good scenaryJohn is coming over this morning to collect his baby.  John used his 23′ Birchaven for years travelling as a plumbing supplies rep.  This moneymaker went years taking him around for business.  Kept her all this time and a couple of years ago had us install a roller cam 403, trans, quad, paint and more so the ole money makes is pulling new duty of smile maker.  His brakes were spongy………a 3 way flush and blled out of the 2 year old fluid and we’re stopping on dimes again.  The motor was tiling slow and John had said it was a cold bugger to start.  Some carb adjustments and that’s done.   Funny part about it is why did something change?  My only answer is that’s the way carbs are.   The definition of a carb is a controlled series of spring loaded air and fuel leaks at just the right amount.  Guess you havta Greek those leaks once in a while!

Had to wait til this morning to set the choke idle…..come on with me while I do that and check timing:  Guess this is what they used to call a “tune-up”.  Set it all back up…. and with an Oldsmobile Quadrajet carb, dialing in the motor is a piece of cake!  It’s said never have a Chevy man work on an Oldsmobile!ffirst off the distributer turns backward to a Chevy………that always messes with a Chevy guy.  Then, no timing light is used to set up the motor.  Phillip has a real fancy one but with a vacuum gauge I can tune my old friend there not to some spec in a book but we can give the motor what it wants.   Original spec. doesn’t mean much after 45 years of …….good intentions!here, I connected a vacuum gauge to the “ported output” that is unique to a Q-jet for an Olds.  Pull off the vacuum line going to the distributer and temporarily connect it to manifold vacuum.  The port on the carb that the distributer is supposed to be connected to gets tha vacuum gauge.wwith the gauge connected fire up the motor and note the vacuum reading.  You want 2″ of vacuum.  Turn the idle screw with the 1/4″ nut driver you see til you read 2″ on your vacuum gauge.  You may have to turn the distributer if the motor slows too much while adjusting the idle screw. At 2″ of vacuum on this output means the carb is in its idle circuit ready to changeover to the primary jets the moment you hit the gas..  Nudge the throttle and watch the needle jump.  Only Olds carbs have this “ported output”  that can tell you actually when that carb should be in its idle circuit.  I can’t tune a Chevy this way……….now, with 2″ of vacuum and the distributer is connected to manifold vacuum…….twist the distributer to 950rpm on you Tach .  Turn the motor off then back on, if it labors to start turn the dust. Counterclockwise until when starting it fires over without laboring…..right on that edge.

Ok, now go drive it like you stole it and she how she performs.  It might try to “ping” under a heavy load only…..more than you would drive it……..Ok, the motor has been given what it wants.  Reconnect the dist to the ported output on the carb.   Verify your tune….connect the vacuum gauge to the intake manifold.  In park, AC off you should have @ 18″ of vacuum on your gauge.  In gear should drop vacuum @2-3″…..dash a.c. with an original A-6 monster compressor will drop your vacuum maybe another 2″.  That means that lump is costing gas to turn!  Get rid of it for a new Sanden rotary compressor.  The mod is cheaper than trying to find an A-6 that will stay together!  My opinion………

Anyway, the carb should be set up……….for a while……….to continue to chew on this paper gas we now have….having no real meat.  Run no Ethanol and you will pick up maybe 2mpg.  Stinks but here we are.

One day we ALL will be fuel infected……resistance I’d futile….but until then suck-on carbman!

El got the memo this is a day offguess I should chill too.  See ya later……..
