The Co-op: Some ramblings, it always happens when I sit back and relax a little

Janis saw fit to post a pic of me in relax mode wearing my Peace shirt which I usually only wear this day…..other days you get different responses!

Anyway it’s true this has not been my usual condition but I’ll confess to you ….and I know there are many out there will agree…… if you live through that first serious event after pushing to pass out for so long…..you are the fool if you don’t pay attention!

You go in whipper snappers have that to look forward to!  Your reality is what you make it but to me I’m working hard at balancing this new thing I have been exposed to “a real life” I want to find ways to enter into that part of my life and still give the dream of “Cooperative Motor Works”  a chance to keep on its mission.

Some of you might get sick when I plunk this down ……deal with it and hit escape!  I actually did write a business plans with a mission statement:  There is a legitimate income from helping people” and as altruistic as I’m sounding the one thing I didn’t want to spend my life ripping people off making them unhappy.  I feel when I run into someone difficult to work with it means they just don’t understand why we’re involved.  See…..you still have a chance to not get sick by hitting escape!

If you’re still reading for what every reason thanks.  It really was economic suicide throwing my family fortune into such a stupid money making business plan.  So it should have been no surprised to me that this business has not become a big money generator.  I call that a success because I started the Co-op because I wanted to….not as much to make a killer nest egg.  Success….we have employment now 10 people over 22 years focused mostly on 1 obscure now 45 year old. 55 Third of the RV world.  Wow, it’s been a wild ride!and during that time the business and I myself have gone through many realizations and changes.  The “Cooperative” part of the name of coming by and helping us work on your coach we found out why the joke:

“Will cost much more if you help” sign in the greasy ole garage.

Don’t take it wrong but it’s true.   In general, the reason you bring your coach to a specialist is your belief they should know more than anyone else how to do things.

These coaches are not new homes or aircraft.  You renovate these things based on what you run in to that needs attention.  Its one off, custom, craftwork………specialized labor, the money sucking pig of the world.

But wait a minute, was the decision to seek a specialist to find the lowest price investment?  Do most people who have progressed to a top in the field will cost less than Bubba and Scooter at the “fix any car auto emporium”!

Ok, you want a good job and you have caught the best help you can find.  Now all that’s needed is to tell those folks what you’re wanting and now sit back and let the best they can do happen…….and unless you know something different listen to their recommendations.

One way you say…..”I’m paying for this……I want things the way I want”……problem is being fresh in the industry you may or may not know what is and is not possible……what is and is not cost effective and so many more things that come with decades of screwing up.

Stresses should be on making good decisions and execute the mission fully……..not as much on what that costs……utoh….you can’t write an open check……..what things cost are what it costs in materials and to pay a competent person to do the work.

The world is all about the money……..it does cost to have things done.  Things you want depends on how much you can afford to invest in something you WANT!   Needs like a roof on your house or the cost of a new car.   Those things you shop and have pretty hard estimates manly because this is a staple expense you must be sure you don’t pay too much.

But now lets go back to the fact that you spend money on these vintage machines because you WANT TO, so being the cheapest is not the end goal.  Fretting and stressing others on price should be to see if the cost of the work is reasonable and needed.  From there Its pretty much an expense you have already committed to.

Get done what you want and what makes you happy.  Don’t lessen its excitement in what it costs since you have made the decision to do this.

The key is to find someone who you are having do things that believes there is a legitimate income from helping people

NOW, you can projectile vomit !!!!!  Go somewhere else because that is what Cooperative Motor Works is still about.  I have beliefs it will carry on long after the day I hang up my business life completely.  For now we have attracted some super professionals who also care…….make me feel good and I hope this is the reason we have the projects we have.   Thank all of you for making my decision a good one.
