…………… Generally speaking its true folks don’t want others to point out problems they don’t know about even when its really important and if you thought I was just grand standing about all that air bag stuff…. . lemme tell @ the call I got yesterday and what is sitting at the shop right now in need of some real help and while I describe this put yourself in this mans shoes….and in mine who has to say something. If I don’t and more falls off his coach after we glue back on what just failed……will it be my fault
Guys this happens here and I see this every week! I will have to point these things out this morning to someone who has no idea what dangers they are in. One has already classically bitten them and more are lined up.
Call me the bad new bear or whatever you want…..this guy and probably many of you out there are bouncing on the same thin limb but after today I hope at least you will have an idea what you need to do. No grandstanding here, its happening as we speak.
Its going to take a little here to lay this out so please bear with me and read this all when I get finished. You owe it to yourself and your coach to listen to this. Ok, off to breakfast…..I’ll post (updated) on the post title as I plunk more. You must understand the position I’m in…..if I say nothing I’m part of the problem…….ill be back soon….
Ok, settled in at Dixie Belle for the morning fuels let me start this by saying weekends can be pretty busy on the “Batt phone” folks calling for help. Getting ready for our 40th anniversary surprise party….it was to an extent and thanks for all those folks who did that for Janie and I.
So the phone buzzes glowing red, a desperate voice was downloading his issue so fast my first job always in these cases is to let it come all air……..”Apolle 13, give us your status…..”. We have a wiped out rear wheel bearing. Yep, 1 of the 4 rear wheels on the coach cannot turn……a flat bed trailer will be in his immediate future!
As I pointed out earlier this weekend, if any of your rear wheels fail, your single air bag on each side will not allow you to move. No spare air bag to tire cannot held him, the bearing locked up probably spindle damage….whatever its done.
Being in the Mecca state for all kids young at heart I have on call contingents for this so ordering up a LandAll in a couple of hours we had him plugged into 50 amps at the Co-op RV resort.
Taking my son to the airport back to Cali after the party I swung by the shop to meet the folks and do a triage what we have.
If you break down on the road, a covenant I’ve made with restoration projects in house….when someone breaks down on their journey we all stop the restorations…..get the traveller back on the road. Hey, you would want me to do that for YOU….so today I need to get this man back on the road …..
On their”grand tour” around the country they have still half the country to see…..man, I cant wait to do that!
A great attitude about it they’re taking it all in stride already having a few issues they’re just loving life….awesome, its what this is all about!
A good looking recent silver/black paint job kinda looked like one of ours….but in the greeting my eyes were looking at a few key things I could see standing beside the coach that disturbed me!
So right off we know 1 wheel bearing has flawed out which means all 4 rear wheels need to be investigated. Looking I could easily see there are 45 year old rear brake hoses and plastic cones on original air bags!
I haven’t even touched the coach and can bet you brake components are ancient, no one would put a new air bag on a plastic, recalled air bag….and 1 wheel bearing is gone……..where do I start and after driving this many miles already who’s to say the rest of these ancient seriously important parts will make the rest of the trip.
Do I fix the problem in front of us , put blinders on…rake their money and let them spend more on additional breakdowns as the old parts loose their final grip? How much of this will they accept….I mean we’ve made it THIS far?
If someone had pointed out the original hoses which means probably EVERY brake part is looking to squat somewhere and how much are they accepting before the budget puts them in stressworld!
Their air bags are waiting to blow, brakes wanting to fail following the lead of the bearings…..and that’s just the rear wheels!
THIS NOT UNUSUAL…..ITS EVERY WEEK FOR ME, I feel like a reasearcer at the CDC….. everything I touch looks like an epidemic! Of course it’s not but being in the loop seeing so much of this happen is what fuels me to say things folks don’t want to hear…..
Fix it better……quad air bag and he would not have had to make that phone call mobilizing the troops. Ill have the brake components laying on the ground. If 1 set of bearings, how old are the other 3 bearings? Minimum the plastic cones have to go. If I don’t say anything…..install a new bearing and send him on his way………what good have I just done. He has no idea plastic cones are bad Juju and also has no idea how to ID a brake line far past its prime!
I will NOT do what all the other shops have been doing……fixing their immediate problem……make them falsely think all is good and send them down the road.
What else can I do? I was almost upset at myself at blowing the last couple of days plunking here upsettingfolks. I tell you this morning…..if that’s what it takes to make sure all of you guys are as safe as you need to be………no sir, I’m going to keep telling folks “the emperor is wearing no clothes”!
A quad bag rear suspension is a countermeasure you should not leave home without, brake parts cannot be old and don’t run tires over 5 years.
If you don’t believe at least 2 of these 3 facts I would not leave your county limits!
.Pulling into the shop, the coach is a good looker…….with original brake hose +
So after a talk I find they have owned this coach for many years, love it and have the interior just for them. They had it painted and love the coach. This is great but remember through years of interacting with the coach even having repairs done at a dealer……..they still have original brake hoses and plastic air bag cones! 45 year old parts and they are thousands of miles from home.
Do I burst the bubble, of fix the 1 blown out wheel bearing, spindle or whatever and send them on their way? If you were bouncing out there on that proverbial thin limb…..would you want someone to say something? And if you did say something would you take the risk of destroying their faith in their coach and come off like a salesman trying to make a buck?
Answer me that question. Obviously other dealers have done that to them…..”ignorance is bliss” I guess and he has already said he believes “if something ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Holy Crap, I hope this doesn’t go sideways….hey, you were involved before I opened my mouth and u know why I did it…..u are my witnesses!
So here we go, the rest of the work will continue today but I have to figure the best way to help these folks. If you have something to say about this call me right away…….I’m going in here shortly….see ya tomorrow…..I have my mission
No names are used here to protect the innocent………..the bearing blew apart, that’s the cage drooping down
