I said it’s doable, didn’t say it was easy!Pulling out the outer rubbers on late model windows is easy. Pulling out each fixed window digging out the 45 year old goopenpuckythen reversing each with new RTV isn’t a big dealird reinstalling the new rubbers that’s the painful part. Hey but u just get it all done. 76′ total of rubber and 16′ of vertical felt and 1 full tube of RTV……. and your thumbs will not like you the next day but the windows look great! Now we move on to sealing the window frame to the body and refinishing the black frames. Above you see each window gets “bagged off” leaving @ 1/8″ of the body showing. Clean, sand and prep the frames we’ll shoot the frames with satin black self etching trim black paint. This layer of UV protection will also protect the newly installed rubbers from deteriorating so quickly. Ill show you guys that step tomorrow.
You know some projects work well while others need a bit more baking. I had been saving all the beautiful pea green plaid seat material that I could find. Hey, the stuff is so crazy someone would want it! And a customer wanted to see if we could build up a dinette seat……….So we did but I talk ya, saving all that material over the years. Tearing it all apart then paying a truly professional upholstery guy what it took to stitch the thing all together.……..for the cash it took to do it……is descent bud old faded material worth the money?Well, it IS the dinette seat and it DOES manipulate to a bed and it IS made of the original material accurate right down to the buttons……but it was expensive to put together. See that’s a problem when someone want a 45 year old anything totally restored to “original”. I wish we had better material but original 45 year old material is really hard to find.
Personally, bringing something back to use today it difficult to use most any original finished materials. Its all just too old. Look at a restoration today as more of an accurate “Restomod” using new materials but classic styling…..like we’re doing with Ruby.Ooriginal piping and shapes but new natural materials and colors. Same time in labor with a better outcome. In not suggesting that original made dinette we just made be used. Next time we build it we’ll use new materials. I understand the draw of “original” but lets settle with “original look”……..labor is the money sucking pig of the worlf. Amazon can’t help us there so we need to be careful the work we put out is worth it. Sometimes it is what it is…..we all should try to do better………
So today the guys and I will finish up the window restoration on this Palm Beach…….same as original but with aluminum rivets instead of the rusty steel screws that were useda’ll will be refinished and sealed. I’ll show you the finished product tomorrow.Rone’s coach has the lift right now getting its undercarriage work done. His quad bad rear suspension in, Phillip is shooting POR-15 rust killer and protective coating for all the steel parts under there.Nasty stuff the mask keeps him breathing being so close to the spray. After the POR-15, Phillip with rubberized undercoat everything else under the coach to protect from further damage.
10 degrees warmer today you guys up north……30 below……below what? Below nothing???? Jeeeezzzz the beach house is open, call me! Quick!
