See THAT! Give him a couple days off and a little time to think and look at all that crap that falls out!
AND THEN…. he blows us off for ANOTHER DAY!!! What’s the deal?
OK, don’t shoot… I’m trying to stand as close as I can to the piano player….
I think all that spilled out just like when anyone sits and contemplates what it’s all supposed to be about. You don’t… sorry for that because sometimes that “can’t see the forest for the trees…. half full–empty thing and all that.
I can tell you starting this business over 20 years ago, I would say it’s been a real learning process. Like most small shops a great idea, somebody that can’t get it out of their mind…. underfunded, overworked knowing only what your knew and you look up 20 years later shake it off and say out loud … WOW!
The end result of any idea is kaos…. and Get Smart…. so hitting that wall something must be done. You can’t keep on your plan because you’ve outgown it and what was the best you could do with your talents given your shortcomings. In this business there are no models, no one can graph out what you do when as the Don Henley song says “when it all comes up to the lawyers…”
Now what? You want to grow the business but it can’t the way it was…… Quality…. Speed …. Cost…… The saying always ends in “pick 2”. Human nature, self worth and comfort level kicks in and that adage is true when you are talking about the labor of a one man shop… even a 3 or 4 man shop when each is the only practitioner of a certain job description. There you are working on one job… a guy pulls in off the road with no brakes and the rest of the world must stop to help that guy….. A project will have to suffer…… it’s the way of the industry. One guy knows that pulling the expert off his work to do something fast… you slip the guy a 20. There ya go… you had to pay for the speed, that is if you seek to do the right thing. Some folks want it all….. fist person service … the best ever done at the price of the shade tree guy around the corner.
Guys I wanna do all that why… because it would be great if someone treated me that way… so you work at that but failure is inevitable when too many people want too much attention from too little labor capacity. There it all is…. but is there a way to try and offer it all or at least a little more AND not loose all?
YES THERE IS…. and it’s simple, work as a team! Yeah, I’ve listened to all that mess too, Panasonic used to send me to every “dare to be great seminar” they could…. Got really tired of hearing how great I could be…… I wanted a beer somewhere in there! But you know, the core of that stuff was and now is true!
You can’t sit in a dingy room like a cobbler tinking on a shoe sole when the bell attached to the door rings and the guy stops and says “can I hep ya”? It only will take that man so far……. you can offer better services, faster service AND lower overall costs if you can get a team together to tink those shoes. Brothers and sisters this is the “whole nine yards”. Hey a fun fact…. that whole 9 yards was a full bbelt of bullets for a BAR I’m told so when I say that I mean it’s the way I can make things much better than they were and guys really, this is what I’m wanting to do.
No more lone rangers, only one guy tinking at doing one thing… we do have specialists for some heavy stuff but my team is cross-rained now to be able to shift gears and focus on a project. Are we good at it yet… nope but I’ll tell you it’s getting better every day and that’s what the excitement is here.
Cal’s exterior was our first “production coach”… and it worked out well Lemme hit some breakfast, I’ll be back and I would like to finish my though if you will permit me…. really, life is exciting right now…
I’m back and yes, the scrambled eggs were good…. So that’s it, yesterday was just so busy… it started and dawn and didn’t let up. Installed a Honda generator Today we pick up the flooring for “Savoy Brown” and double check our time tables of all the vacuum form parts being made. Gonna check on our motor remanufacture…. and so much more.
I will have to apologize up front… here it is 8:19 and I gotta go. I tell ya and thanks for the “Ditto” Emails… if you haven’t seen what we’re all about here at the Co-op in the last year… you need to think about it and what it is you want out of your vintage RV…… This is what we’re doing…. go to a one man show and you may be happy but things are getting better every day around here… need something done, brother we can do it.
See ya tomorrow…. .
