First though it seems like I got a rise out of a few when I said don’t drive over 60mph. Thanks for the posts but that’s not exactly the meaning. Let me answer this for everyone who commented right here: With the aerodynamic up to 58mph the GMC enjoys, driving speeds beyond that you increase stresses on the drive train….. I’m not saying a GMC WON’T do that, I’m saying considering the age of many critical components in the drive train and each being somewhere in their envelope of viable reliability, if you CAN drive 60mph…like I do, heck I WANT more seat time… the faster I go the less time I get to drive!……. you may tax a part and cause a cascade of issues as recently in a guy who I feel just didn’t get it when we said “don’t drive it like you stole it” and things will be fine. Yep, comments ranged from “right -on” to “I just can’t drive 60”. Bunky, I’m not telling you to but if you are not as certain as you feel you need to taxing this 40 year old war horse….. just don’t do it… and if you just have that froggy feeling to jump then don’t do it for hours! Hey, impress the guy next to you at the light or pass a toaster-box RV with gusto just to show-um who’s boss but don’t do the “I made damn good time” the way my Dad who was a Greyhound bus driver felt an irresistible urge to pass everything on the road like knocking down Dominos! We always got there but he drove with that “gusto”. No, no, no, don’t do that with a GMC Motorhome! You will pay!
One last point on that, if you had fully restored your coach and I mean FULLY, you might have more confidence but don’t let the big fact that you paid a pile of cash and you want to abuse your money……. brother it just won’t work! You cannot do that with this vehicle. Most coaches on the road have not been “fully restored” … are considered original “survivors” and man with a coach like that, you just cannot take a chance! You may be proud you made the Kesser Nebuly in 3 Parsects like Hans Solo in his trash can Malinium Falcon but he too was nuts to do that and try and save the world with a hack like that…. hey that was part of the absurdness of what he did! So your coach is not the Malineum Falcon and you don’t travel with the FORCE so protect yourself… when you are in your coach… the trip should be about you and you having fun but you also must consider your motorhome, it’s needs and watch it like a hawk. Hope this calms some ruffled feathers and got some other wings out to fly. This is a great machine but you must always understand what you are driving and be excited it just works and is on the road! Blinding speed, burn-outs and low ET’s is not what owning a 26′ hot rod is about…. you can have fun playing with that but don’t stay there……. moving on
It will probably happen to each of us through your driving career but my number came up the other night and I was in an accident… with my beloved tow car “Ralph”. A gal from out of town was trying to make a U turn I guess and pulled into rush hour traffic……. Just got the brakes fixed on Ralph and averted a Tbone crash with a Nissan. The tow bar on the front took the big hit saving direct impact of me and Ralph and that car The tow bar took the hit and is wasted, the car will probably be totaled being a 1996 with 450,000 miles… what a bummer, that thing was ME! The Nissan had a dent on the door, flat tire and all those really expensive air bags deployed Ralph stopped on that proverbial dime with it’s new brakes I know saved that Nissan from being hammered like a roofing nail… I give the glory though to that tow bar! Like that bar on the front of cop cars, that thing protected me and the other driver. It may look unsightly…. you could say ugly but any car I get in the future to replace this will need to be towed and will have a big-ole-nasty tow bar on the front! Any Ralph still drives fine, not even alignment issues… hey, maybe I’ll put a new tow bar on the front and keep Ralph on the road! It’s just such a good car for me……
So yeah, the 50 Ford pick-up got picked up yesterday and will be somewhere in that mass of cool cars at the Daytona Turkey Rod Run coming up. Guys, lets keep this in perspective, the desires of this gentleman had a price tag probably 2 or 3 times what many of you have in your GMC. He may blow past you on I-4 but rest assured somewhere up the road he will have pulled off at a rest area or simply throttled back to a normal speed….. that’s why he spent the money…… but he will in no way expect the 5.0 Ford fuel infected, PS, PB, Auto, AC, full air ride truck to drive and fulfill the expectations of a new truck costing less than he has in this beauty. He has it cause he wanted it…. and understood he would have to pay to get it done! This interior was made in our upholstery shop from “scratch” So hey, got a cool car you wanna get looking good? Give me a call, we can do this and more……. With the talents we have attracted we are now lending those resources to more than just the GMC Motorhome…… and ending this part and putting it into perspective……. these jobs are more involved, more expensive to complete and the owners are so happy to find a specialty rod shop that won’t rip them off……. I can see many more of this sort of work in our future.
Future nothing…. remember we’re delivering the 57 stretch in a couple of days….. We’re in the drivers area now building the control console. Here’s the front (really packed now sporting it’s black houndstooth console Awsome guys! And I love the big cup holders! The bed linered bumpers are not on yet but this “rock guard” bedliner rocker panel treatment came out looking nice, with the bumpers on it should have it’s own style….yeah, we’ll blackout the wheel liners too….. stay tuned for that….
As a parting note today, owning and driving a GMC Motorhome you must be one with it….Oh, now I sound like “Grasshopper”… no really, you must listen to the coach… they talk, you must be kind to your family member, expect much from it but also give it what it needs to do the job and don’t get freaked out when something happens….. these things are old… fun, sleek, impressive and all that but always remember…it was made by the hand of man and it will fail!
See ya later…….
