The Co-op: Bogy troubles (UPDATED)

If you haven’t owned a GMC you may not know the lingo…..I mean where else do you hear someone say bogy….not goofy or booty it’s something all together different…..and important.

So renewing the rear suspension, quad bag system, shocks, brakes, etc. we found too much movement in the swing arm pins in the bogyit all LOOKS great but lifting the wheel up to where it rides the pulling in and out on the drum you can see excessive movement.  Bummer, only 1 thing to dothe bogy comes off the frame.  The worn swing arm pins must be driven out thru the back…..swing arms come off

The pins removed and its all taken out to be cleaned.  These worn pins, their bronze bushings, thrust washers and seals will be replacedyep, a pile of work but hey….45 years and that part timed out.  The pins ride on bronze bushings, here they are shrinking down in the freezer next to the life giving freeze popsffreezing these bushings before they get seated into the swing arm first lets them press in easily but 2 as they warm up and swell back out man do they get tight in the hole!  After that the bushing is cut to size with a reemer tool to have the new round pin to fit snug it will all go back together.  Stay tuned and I’ll show you more on this as it progresses……..

One thing about owning one of these, you can never be homeless!  Got to the house last night to heat inside…..bummer, no power to the thermostat.  Floida……summer……can u say lets sleep in sweat?  Packed up dinner, some shorts and tooth brash and headed back to the shop for a night in JayGee.This morning I was already at work!  Worked out cause I had the first position with my alignment guy.  Its a 17 mile drive but I’ve followed him for a good 10 years.  I used to do the alignment myself but this guy is now my guru…..he knows what I want and he’s great for putting another set of specialized eyes on the subject. On the drive “hot rod” had a new meaning…….GM never intended the vacuum operated dash AC/heat system to work 45 years…….if u can get heat out of it when its cold out and cold when the sun bakes ya……call it working!  Well this thing would not create heat……..we install our usual twin ball valves on the heater core basically hot wiring the beast to blow heat………..got that working and the guys left it on………there’s a good reason the temp reading on the FiTech panel was so lowguys trust me now when I tell u there is heat commin out of those vents!!!!!!  This is the easy fix, to actually sit in the driver seat and operate it from cold all the way to hot……by itself……nothing else……well THAT would take some more work!  There’s a really good reason dash units today use electric servos……..

Anyway I’m getting this alignment handled before the coach gets its wings…..talk to ya tomorrow
