I’m processing pics, had a guy come in early….put me behind but here’s a pic for David of his new front area carpet in…… I’ll be back soon with more stuff….I’ll put (updated) on the title when I get back………see ya then
OK, I’m back with lower res pics so as to not lock up your computer……
CRAP!!!!! I was ready to hit (Update) and it want away! I’m doing this again from memory…Oh Boy!
So what I said before…….I’d like to give you a fer tips to be “Good to KNow”. maybe you can learn from this.
So here we go…again! There are a couple of guys over on Facebook working on their brakes. It was good to see they got the memo about “doing everything” when it comes to the “B’s & B’s”…that’s the bearings and brakes. Here’s something that just happened to us even keeping the “do everything” in mind.
So listed on John G. bucket list was to buy a GMC Motorhome…..a worthy thing but more than that he wanted to do the Hot Rod Magazine (Power Tour)…Wow, another great one….I’ve had that on my bucket list for a while! Back when we were doing the Motorhome Drag Race rallies something like hitting the Power Tour would be the next logical extension of our fun stuff. If you would like to see some of what made up our GMC Motorhome Drag Race Rallies go to Utube and search “Motorhome Drag Race”……. it’s there under “Killer RV Upgrades…stuff like “Larry” our Fire Fight sponsor coach inching out Jim G. and his “Little Orphan Anne” Great fun but anyway we were up against the Power Tour dates coming up ….2 days before the start we pulled John’s coach out…FiTech fuel injection, new tires and wheels, quad bag, bearings, brakes, cool radio, dash and more………..good job, we made it.
Heading home (lived nearby), it ran great but the red brake light was flashing…great brakes but with the light nagging you “pull over you FOOL” John called and we had to check it out.
We found a rusty residue line on his power brake booster and brake fluid bypassing the rear seal Now wait…how could rust form so fast!
and wait..we don’t paint our brake master cylinders black! Looking back at the paperwork, John confirmed that he had put the master cylinder on when he bought it to get it to us………..we had not replaced the master cylinder in that he had stated it had been recently replaced. It bleed out great and in fact was still giving good fluid pressure to the NEW brakes in the front and rear of the coach!
Yep…….our “complete brake job” didn’t include a new brake master cylinder because the direction was it was new and reliable. See what I mean? The one part that everyone thought would be “OK” wasn’t. Why did it fail so quickly? Only the shadow knows….was it rebuilt…remanufactured or new? Was it bench bleed…….was it a crappy master out of the box again maybe Jimmy Hofa knows but for whatever reason all the work we did on the brakes was for naught because we assumed something…..DON’T DO THAT….. Trust me in the future when I say a COMPLETE brake job I’m not going to care if you did the master cylinder recently…I’m not hooking my brakes to your master cylinder! When you do brakes replace EVERYTHING at 1 time. Then you will KNOW the background of this safety device.
Now we DID the rear drums and front calipers…we did the rear bearings, races and seals ….did we do the fronts? Had no play and no heat…hope that wasn’t another one but hey, it’s not about what to do but where to STOP!
John DID call me from the road…seems the heavy battery cable to the starter fell off it’s bracket…rubbed against the drive shaft and shorted out……..Everyone go under the coach and look up at your big red cable going to the starter…..is everything OK? We didn’r see that on our inspection so please learn from this yourself.
And this is why you need water shut-off valves on BOTH hoses going to your heater core
Got this coach out for a test drive…backed up 50 feet and this heater core started leaking. Punch list didn’t have (heater core leaking) with the heater hoses in good condition we did not have listed to add shut-off ball valves on our work order………that coach now has a good heater core AND 2 shut-off ball valves……….It’s not what to do but where to stop!
So guys, if you don’t take these examples to heart you have just waster what…bout 10 minutes of your life? It’s figuring out what parts are OK to keep using….and whatever you say is OK to leave…..will break next!
Thus that lesson is done………………
So what else is on my mind today With the heater core secure, here are the daytime running lights on our new LED headlight set. Prices are coming down more…. less than $175 now! How low will they go? Stay tuned…but frankly they are so inexpensive now that their performance is much more valuable then the cost. You want good headlights….put in LED and forget about it…….
Yep, Junior is still grinding away on Ruby’s red. We wet sand to 3000 grit then buff with the new foam pad buff system. There’s just no way around this if you really want a quality finish……
Got the call to pick up the next production run of our “toll booth” windows. These 2 palates are headed to the west coast so all You guys with back orders will be getting theirs soon.
Hey but that’s not all we got and how did they get to the shop? I put Larry into service loading the contents of 6 palates of toll booth windows in his belly! That cool back door and the “kneeling” function of the 4 bagger system made things MUCH easier…..good ole Larry….. and I broke down and loaded them myself! So when you get your windows know that water stain on the outside of the box was my sweat! Uck!
Finally for today and understandably so, most of you who have met me know I’m a bit of a nostalgic pack rat. I mean I have the 4 carbs off my Gold Wing hanging on the wall in the shop! Hey, what can I say it’s me and here’s another stupid fetish that fits right in there…….These are circa 1980 Transformer calculator watch. I have it in 2 colors…..and they work perfect!
Who cares? Hey, they still work….I mean how long since YOU’VE seen one? I’m recovering….there is hope……..
Oh, and the 1988 Volvo I picked up to have a really reliable car I can work on……….? the REAL workhorse is sitting behind the &^%%#@ Volvo! 1 out of 10 starts is hard…30 seconds to get the squirrels going………..HERE WE GO AGAIN!
I’ll live….see ya tomorrow
