Vintage RV & Motorhome restorations - "The GMC Coop"

STOP THE. RIDE…….. I wanna get off!………

………. So I’ve used this page to show you DIY’ers all about the GMC but the original reason for this page is to give folks with projects here what goes on in the shop and for those scheduled to come in what it’s all about here.  Well today I’ve gotta talk to the group participating here with us…….

Guys, it takes a big man to cry uncle and as of this week we are forced to close down our project intake until we can catch up with our workload.  What does that mean?  It means that for many reasons we have been overrun with excited new GMC owners buying “new to them” coaches excited about getting on the road.  Hey, that’s great but for many reasons this massive increase in vintage RV……. it’s clear to me the GMC is on the rise!

Heree’s one example of what this success has caused.  A coach comes in with its excited owner that wants his baby to be all fixed up.  Great, that’s what we’re here for……so the coach arrives and we sit and bang out a budget and timeline…….the coach stays while it’s owner heads home and we get started.

THEN, we have the coach in our lineup to get started on the coach.  Excited to be a part of the community this new owner does as I suggest and start watching here on the Daily Pose all thats going on and all the new neat things we are doinglike roller motors, FiTech fuel injection, Serpantine belt systems, quad bag systems…..sorry gutys, my phone isn’t throwing pics…….let me press on and make this point

So these excited new owners see what can be done to their baby and naturally want more things done.  GREAT you say but here’s the rub……….adding all sorts of things to the lineup of work will stretch out the time needed to do all that stuff….that pushes back when the coach gets finished and ALSO slows down the work on projects in front and behind the now expanded project.

So now we have more things to do, more time to do it and that’s time we had to get with other projects and here we go!  Someone wants their coach for a wedding and the stress starts.

How can I be fair with all of the other projects when we can have double the expected work load…..and more projects on the schedule to come in wanting their coach in and out too!  I tell you it’s a nightmare…..how do I do what everyone wants when everyone wants more…….and then there’s Covid.

Parts suppliers have dried up, now that things are loosening up, folks wanna have their coach and get out….. More folks want to buy more coaches and want more neat stuff done….and the roller coaster ride speeds up.

Again STOP! We’ve got to stop what this is doing….we are completely clogged with coaches staying here longer, finding more things to include coupled with the stresses of the day…….. I hope you can see the challenge.

We must stop this black hole effect and get back in control.

So do I say….no additions to projects?  That’s a pretty stupid thing to do….we are here to do that work others don’t do!  Do I blow off some stepping on their projects boosting others screaming to make them happy?  What about the project I would be kicking back…….THAT’s not fair to the others……and the delivery dates would stretch out and there it is…..

I have made sure we’re telling customer up front coming in that there can be no delivery dates in that we can’t control customer excitement.  We must be fair to everyone and simply cannot run away from our interior, exterior and mechanical lineups…..thats just correct business.  Let me say to all who have projects here and to those looking to bring their coach in……I CANNOT GIVE YOU AN EXACT TIMELINE.  Drop your coach, watch here on the Daily Pose….get excited about your new toy but act like you don’t own it until it’s finished….you will have less stress and will have everytjing you want and have a great coach……when it’s done.  There is nothing we can do to speed up our process.

If you don’t want to wait for your coach and feel stressing me out will do something….it will, you will be driving me crazier than I already am and you will be unhappy when all that does nothing to get your coach done faster.

There are 3 things everyone wants:

Quality work

Fair prices on the work

Fast completion

Pick 2 brother and I tell you I will not rush our work……it must be that way so guys, relax and remember you brought your coach to us because of the work we do not because of the things we overlook or were faster than anyone else.

These are maybe easy words to plunk down here but they are really hard to put in practice and keep up with

So we are literally jammed with all the excitement…..im saying this now so you know….we can only do so much work……we are now on 10 hour days trying to get more done.  4 days a week to keep from driving ourselves insane and working hard on every project trying to do our best.

We can have no adds to current projects in house or understand with more neat things to do comes more time needed to complete the work.  I cannot expand our workload until We get more project thru the shop.

I appologize to those that are with us in these challenges, know we take it seriously to the point our doors are closed until further notice

Man that sounds terrible!  But I hope you understand our problem.  Again, if you can’t wait, if volume of work is more important to you than the quality and price of the project come get your coach or don’t bring it here.  We will NOT cheapen our work to hit some delivery date.  This work cannot be in your hurry……my life and the life of my workers cannot be pressured to do more and work faster…..we will not do it!  We cannot do it for everyone’s sake so just don’t start that stress locker, we can’t play.

Please know your projects will be completed well and you will have all of those things you want…..when it’s done.

If you need to make other plans call me, tell me how we can exceed your expectations but I can’t run projects ahead of others and we will not rush our work……a 45 year old machine NEEDS all the love it needs, these are unique and exciting to own and drive…..theres a reason we are so busy, cut off a piece of this fun .

Thank you for your faith in us and know everyone is important to me.

I hope your eyes aren’t burning from the fire on these pages, there is a challenge here and we are doing something about it.  Anything worth doing is worth doing right and doing complete …….give us the time to exceed your expectations.

Tomorrow I will go back to the same GMC excitement we’ve been dishing out here for 24 years….thank you for your support and NOW my phone threw a pic……figures….see ya later

Interesting issue seems across the industry. I was looking a buying a small travel trailer and the factory tells me the wait time for delivery is 14 months.
