Ramco electric mirror installation

Anyone out there wonder how to install Ramco electric mirrors?  Go through with me the install of Peters.  Ramco makes these as manual units, of course that install is pretty simple (8 bolts, but the electric models take a little more work.  I'm going to break up this install in 2 parts (physical install and then the wiring.  Here we go

Remove the old mirror bracket and be sure the threaded inserts that receive the mirror bolts are tight, if they are loose, put a flat washer on the bolt and tighten it down tight to "pinch" the insert.  If you have a 78 coach with threaded studs sticking out of the body, you will have an entirely new set of problems.   You will need to send the arms back to Ramco to have the holes recessed or you could do it yourself.  Too much mods to cover here, call me.  Insert mounts.jpg (49241 bytes)   Lay out your parts, you should have:  2 mirror head, 2 arms, single "joy stick" control panel, bag of 8 SS oval head bolts, 4 ball insert halves, roll of 5 conductor wire and most importantly the wiring diagram.   Mirror parts.jpg (73956 bytes)   Drill a hole in the middle of the 4 mounting holes on the body to pass the wires through.  Route the wires on the pass. side to the inside of the glove box using a snake (coat hanger wire).  Running wires.jpg (45093 bytes)   The driver side wires will come in to the gauge cluster area.  Pull the wires through leaving enough wire to get behind the arm.  Put a tie wrap on the wire bundle to act as a stop for the wire.  Seal the wire hole with silicone (I use Dow 791).   seal wire holes.jpg (59938 bytes)   If you do not seal the hole, water will get in there.  hold the arm in place and install the 4 mounting screws in loosely until all 4 screws are threading in properly.   installint bases.jpg (62298 bytes)  Run all 4 screws down tightly.  mirror on.jpg (63997 bytes)  Go inside the coach and run the pass. side turn signal wires (black and white) through the firewall to the front through a grommet to the left of the fuse block.  The driver side turn signal wires are routed through a wire grommet to the left of the steering column.  Extend the pass. side 5 wire bundle using the roll of 5 cond. wire from the kit.  Mirror wiring.jpg (58515 bytes)   Be sure the wires are connected well, I use "bell crimps" for this job.   Route the pass. and driver side wire bundles to the driver floorboard.

Using the coat hanger, snake the mirror 5 wire bundles and a pair of 14 ga. wires to the ash tray cut out on the driver side panel.  The 2 wire pair is to be run to the fuse block for power and ground, they will be connected later.  runwires.jpg (62893 bytes)  Using the wiring diagram, connect the controller wiring to the mirrors, be sure the connections are tight.  wires connected.jpg (59271 bytes)   While in the side panel, run any other wiring for other components.  I'm wiring in the hand held CB radio.  The antenna cable had previously been routed from the roof, down the side wall to the side panel.  I ran another pair of wires (12 ga.) from the fuse block to the side panel for power to the CB.  I wired that unit and then mounted the mirror controller and the CB.  wiring done.jpg (66364 bytes)   The final step is to run the ground to the firewall next to the fuse block and the power to an acc. terminal in the fuse block.
