Back in the day, for me that was in the 70’s……… We tooled around in our car listening to radio. Radio was where the center of the world was and what station you listened to defined where you were.
I was a surfer so I leaned toward the off neutral underground station. The signal was weak and the DJ’s were not that good but it was the music…..the weird stuff you never hear anywhere else….like Black Sabboth or Frank Zappa. I was proud of that and proud of my crappy little, unconventional, Rock-n-Roll radio station.
Then money got involved, it became mainstream to hear Jefferson Airplane songs in elevators, the big bux broadcast companies started up “for pay” rock stations and our stick a thumb in your eye underground stations were unearthed…….hosed off and now homogenized music today has taken their place.
Music is just sound today. Video recording and then big brother (the internet) has now taken over. Its a wasteland today of data….you can see and hear anything you want………there is no annnnnnnnticcccipation today………it’s all out there which begs the question, “What has all of this done for us”? I mean turning on the radio in the car is grey noise today….no urgency in the sound….no excitement as to what song will play and who will it offend! Heck, we used to kill the battery in the car with the Pioneer “Supertuner” and those powered 6×9 “mind blower” rear deck speakers!
Ah but Mother Nature finds a way to survive, I hope in your area….If not listen to mine…… “Underground Radio” is alive and well and living in the cloud! Yes, recently I was made aware of this weak signal, crappy little radio station here in the Orlando area pumping out old style Rock-n-Roll, many times NO dj at all ……kinda sounds like a Pandora station but it’s live….its real and its Rock-n-Roll you won’t hear renditions of in an elevator…….it’s in your face, loud, party, lets have a beer music. In fact its name is “94.1 bud”.
The today twist though is the crappy signal is not how you pick up this sound garden…….its also internet streamed! Stick that in your iced tea….. Rock-n-Roll is alive and well in the machine. Max Headroom had the right idea all along…… Fight the machine from within, turn technology onto itself……now if you have a smart phone…..and who doesn’t……. there’s my underground station everywhere I go! And if my car radio has BlueTooth (smart radio) you can blow up you car speakers again with Hot Tuna and Savoy Brown! Your computer can be your rock station too.
I use “Iheart radio” to pick up 94.1 bud. BTW, seems Budweiser is somehow involved in that they use “bud” in their name and their logo is a Budweiser bowtie made of diamond plate…..most appropriate!
So guys….and Rockn’ gals check it out. If you haven’t…..like me…..download the “Iheart” app. do it then search for “94.1 bud” and take a listen. I bet there is one of these weeds shooting up in your area…..wake up to this movement ….stick your head out of the hole and look around. Theres a sickness going round…….a good sickness of good music annnnntissssipationnnnn………underground rock-n-roll has found a way. And as Bob Segar says “Rock-n-Roll is here to stay, it sooths my soul………
All that had less to do with your GMC but wait, having good tunes on the tide is a good thing….. Download one of many radio station access ports on the internet and check this out. With a Bluetooth radio in your coach you too could be driving the “Quadship” of yesterday.
Rock on Garth……..
