GMC Motorhome, Sanding a bad surface

John R. stayed over last night for me to fix his badly shutting door.  I need to bang this out before I lay out some good stuff here.  Was “fixed” before by someone who simply didn’t do it right!  I hate that!  Lets do lunch together…… talk to ya then…  I’ll do pics on the doot job… stay tuned..

OK, I’m back … because of the “Midriff Bulge” these GMC’s get over the years, we had to relocate the striker pin …. no problem… sorry no pics.. it was done too fast!

Moving on a couple of months ago we got in this coach, a recent sight unseen purchase on Ebay motors.  Andy paint 2.

Hey, the thing looked really nice, the interior has a MacDaddy dash, some fine finighng inside and a great stereo….  My body guy kinda felt bad going after a descent finish… most of the stuff he gets is 40 years old  Andy paint 1  Needless to say a nice coach like this had a fair price but still the light blue just had to go.  Pulling the coach in we put a couple of guys on breaking down the lights, trim, mold and stuff and Jose went after sanding (DA) the blue paint to a good bite surface….. the sanding disc gummed up immediately!  WHAT…. the blue color was the thinnest single layer of color Ive ever seen and the clear too… and the whole thing pealed off in sheets!  Andy sanding 8  Andy sanding 10  No, I mean actually pealed off!  Andy paint off 11

Insane!  Obviously, the base didn’t stick to the primer, some places did stick…. Andy sanding 3 which means the entire coach… roof, sides and every nook and kranna has to have that mess off and the old primer surfaced to accept and bond to out new paints Andy sanding 13

We have much of the old primer prepped and the old pale blue paint is disappearing through a massive effort

This pile of rotted sawdust was the floor inside the generator compartment…. couldn’t see the extend of the rotaway until we got the battery out .Andy sanding 1  So we’re pulling the generator, cleaning it all up, replacing the floor the reinsulating the compartment… that original insulation is about goneAndy sanding 2

We have a 7 week timetable with Andy and his family flying in from Switzerland…. lets just see if we can make it…. stay tuned as the drama rises.

Gotta go, check out Patreon, there’s new stuff there… call if I can help and we’ll talk later…..
