I long felt that if it weren’t for weekends and holidays I could actually get something done! Ah but time has taught me to smell some roses or your nose will fall off…… “what you don’t use you loose and all that. So I had to succumb yesterday that with it a 3 day week going into Thanksgiving…… just give up and roll with it! So what was more important yesterday than anything was to get the ice cream truck that parks at our place going… I mean it’s a big weekend for the guy! Won’t start…. gas motor a Vortex…. no fuel…. fuel pump in this fuel tank looks like Jimmy Hoffa could be in! Gotta get on the lift….. Hmmmm, lets try this Junior is saying NO WAY….. Ahhh Grasshopper… watch and learn….. Front wheels up… we’ll make it! So then all day it was fix the (&^$%$@#$&$%%& ice cream truck! Nightfall and we find the filter clogged, putting stress on the in tank pump that finally failed…. there’s some bypass thing in the filter…has 3 ports and no one has it. Which means we take up the ice cream truck tomorrow…… How bout that, a 15 year old truck with a filter no one has……. welcome to mMY world! So here we are, day before Thanksgiving… the little kids want ice cream and everyone wants to go home and pass out on Turkey…….. at least I’m not in that cluster and can sit here and bang out what I hope will be interesting information on the rebuilding of Ruby’s dash.
Cedric saide “go for it” …. I saw it as kinda like that time a guy wanted me to put a Duramax diesel with an Allison transmission in a GMC. Oh please don’t tell you “you can’t do that”! Did that twice to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt you should NEVER do that one again! Hey someone had to do it….. and that what Cedric said about every aspect of his Ruby so here we are on the dash……. of course we want to install a Mac Dash but lets take it further….. lets do something about the dash AC and really make this dash something special, unique and something that maybe can be duplicated…… that’s the thing… ANYTHING can be done with cubic dollars but can you do it again! I look at this investigation and the outcome to maybe be a way to really make the GMC dash something that can make it today. OK some great ideas but nothing starts until says go……. OK so if you paste together each header that says “Ruby’s Dash” you can get a real pic as to what I’m doing today fits in. If you want to do this to your coach fine but I will tell you as much of a genious as Mac McNeal is with his dashes YOU must make it work! “It almost fits perfect”…. how much skill and experience do you have to make that happen? Our GMC’s all look similar but they are NOT all exactly the same like a new Nissan….. you will have to make it work the best and your skill level.. not Mac’s will be the factor… Trust me on this, you can’t build a dash better or for less cash that he can and unless you have done several of these do not expect the outcome I will show you. It’s just the way it is……. this will take me a fraction of the time and I bet if you add the hours it would take someone who has never done this I’m cheaper too! I want to say that because quality is only as good as your abilities. I”ll not say “kids don’t do this at home” but I will say do a little learning first……
So Ruby… say goodbye to your faithful original dash cluster It is actually still in good shape…… wouldn’t be worth trying to graft it onto another coach still… it was nice but here is why you should NOT take the plastic dash out if you expect to use any part of it in the restoration. Some things can come out but these dashes are just soooo brittle, they all have cracks somewhere. Here you see where I resecured the cracks before repairs and cutting out the If you try and take it out, be sure you have a bucket for the rest of the dash that will break apart from removal…… I’m just sayin…. All of that will be epoxy repaired before retexturing……… Goodbye old dash That’s the cluster removed and here is the “root mean” of Ruby’s dash
There’s 1 chunk of carpet at the left but this is everything out that’s going … now we fit this in Remember the operative phrase….”it almost fits perfect” so your job is to make that happen…. Hard to show you how to do that so lemme show you the outcome The drive side panel will also be retextured but it all has to fit together first. Over the years I have heard many at rallies complain about Mac’s fit on this panel….. In short he’s a genius… no cutting and look at his line a little nip-n-tuck on the other side where all 3 pieces come together This will all be fitted then refinished and installed….. but I like the fit
But more than just a pretty face, one feature of Mac’s “Mac Daddy and his second kit is both lower the steering column @ 2” at the dash which puts the tilt of the steering column I thing really where it should have been! And actually you can use this kit on an original dash by reworking the lower dash panel……. but buy the kit from Mac…it fits perfect and holds that column great even has a label printed! Give him the credit…. it costs @ $100 but you can’t make it better for the time it would take you. Say you appreciate him, buy it from Mac…… It takes the column to here…. looks like this in The dash comes with it….. nice fit
Now we can repair the original plastic dash we will use, retexture the plastic parts and stretch the skin on the dash…. stay tuned…. Oh, and have a great Thanksgiving…..
