One major wood component of the GMC is the wood floor. 1973-4 had only wood, later models have a wood/foam/aluminum sheet composite floor construction. Those later model had more insulation and a metal sheet to keep things better sealed.
Today we’re working on a very early (something like 250 of the first year 1973 production.) If you have one of these coaches there were also water leak issues on the forward driver/passenger windows. Some actually have 4 through bolted fasteners! Anyway, here is what happens when those windows leak . The water came in thru the frame and destroyed the sidewall material as it made its way to the floor . The discolored laminate tells you what’s on the underside and the destroyed bottom of the upper walls says mold is there too.
These are the sort of things that were hidden by the carpet cans seats. The forward floor had been previously painted in an attempt to stop water from soaking the wood…..it didn’t work!
What now you ask? If the floor sections are still structural sound we will mix a slurry of “tigerhair” fiberglass and resin to really seal those pours. The areas that are rotted through we’ll square off the opening to good wood the scab in a section.
But more important we must stop this early construction window leak…..and when this is all done, especially in that this 1973 coach has the wood only floor we will PIR-15 all of the undercarriage metal and ruberize undercoat everything else under there. If someone has not done it we will also add heat barriers for the muffler heat. I have seen first tear coaches come in with charred undercarriage floors! The 74′ models had them.
You never know what you will find under your floor covering. Its out a sight so many times out of your mind………..but it’s there!
Stay tuned and watch this damage repair.
