I know I’m supposed to say something in the header for the web crawlers to ID what the post will be about….. I plunk down the first thing that comes to my mind when I sit down, always have and that one is being hard to change… gets me in the plunking mood so I know James… I’m working on it and thanks for letting me in on how that works… Now if I could figure out how to set up font and color defaults….. I’m working on it..
Yesterday, Kevin was laying on the base color coats on Ron’s bumpers You look at that and say Wow, nice finish. He also treated the plastic marine hatches then based those as well
So you look at all that and say man, what a nice finish again. Then this morning I walk into Kevin’s cocoon, still dark outside so my pics are a bit grainy but I think you have the idea.
Now this finish is with 5 coats of clear and this is why
Yep, and Monday he will start the same 3 grit wet sanding a buff process on them… sorry guys but that’s the difference…
In between Kevin got juggy with Dadid G. furnace and water heater panels , you know these
And I know some will say hey, it looked good enough without the wet sanding.. hey and it does look better than most painters will do or most owners would expect… let me show you the difference in another way… here is one of the solid surface (Avonite brand…. it’s bowlingball composite material) You can see a slight lighter finish on the left
The right side was polished with the left side being the factory finish most would be happy with. Now let me take another pic and an angle where you can see a reflection
Now you can see how the light is absorbed by the unfinished section and there’s a bright, high reflection on the right side. Those are the “nubbles” sticking up not reflecting the light. The right side has those taken off and the mirror finish is seen. It’s the same way on pint.. the “nubbles” stick up, hold dirk and do not reflact the light and shine that well. Wet sanding them off and finish sanding using finally 3000 grit polishing compound does a number on the finah finish just as it does solid surface. All it takes is time… time is money and that’s why you do not see a shine like this on most paint jobs.. or solid surface counter tops either for that matter. There’s no mirical silocone polymer or snake oil that will surplant that finish.. no sir there’s just no short cut to quality. If someone says they can do it for less, they are either a non profit organisation (don’t know any evangelical paint shops.. oh, and a disgruntled evalgilist turned multimillionair turned motorhome guru can’t go this either. Sorry, it slipped…
This is the work we do and what folks seek us out to do for them. Get a “cave-n-pave” paint job if you like.. get an Ikea countertop and you could be happy but if you want to stand out… have a machine that is just like your dreams got you excited about and know that your coach WILL look better than most in the lineup… brother we’re the ones that can make that come true. Yes, this is really gratuitus advertising but guys, somewhere along the line someone has to stand up and say “The emperor is wearing no clothes” and I’m not talking about The Donald…
So yeah, for me today.. The beat DOES just go on.. and on… and on. We’ve been doing this in the same shop to the same motorhome for over 18 years now. Hot shots and guys thinking they have invested the better mouse trap have come and they have gone. Loudmouths have yelled “look at me.. I’m better… bla, bla, bla”. Guys it takes consistency, it takes true caring about your trade and taking pride in the work.. there is absolutely no short cut to the quality and the only thing that brings that is expertice and exposure to the situations. I may sound like I’m one of those Republican candidates standing on that stage last week… guys it’s just a fact… Jim K. Miguel, Jeff S., Dave L., Dick P., Zeb F., and I put myself in there… these GMC specific parts and repair dealers have the background that you can trust to do work for you and supply proper parts for your coach. We here at the Co-op focus on the whole coach in our restorations …. we are the last men standing and we can tell you from experience what the GMC motorhome is all about.
If you wanna play with your coach fine.. I like to do that oo but if you want to get it going and want it to stay together support us and guys we are doing our best to support you. Having the right part is good and we all can help you with that but knowing what to do with it AND if it’s right for you… brother that’s what we do.
I’ll step off the soap box now, no need to push “esc.”… I’m bout done for the day anyway but really , along with the amazing group of folks we call the GMC community are those that care enough to help you with your toy.. seems to me important for everyone to work together… or we will ALL suffer.
Have a great weekend, here…. The beat will go on….
