Vintage RV & Motorhome restorations - "The GMC Coop"

A little late for you really early risers……sorry……

……… Life around here has been tops derby if any of you going guys know what that means…….sunrise over the back fence is a calming time for me.  Still for some reason I feel compelled to be first in.  By this time it’s become more difficult but if it helps I try and lend that…..

Eleganza approves of itand of late, Jason, Bob and the guys have been working on our new organisation to speed up our now much more complicated processes.

That may sound a bit cryptic…..lets me explain:

A total restoration process is just that, a string of projects in all sorts of direction with the end goal being whatever the overall restoration is to include.  But wait….theres more!  As we do our work we find new ways to solve problems……example, the steeringing shaft connecting your steering column to the gear box has not been produced ….well forever.  I have packed away for when a big project would need it.  You can understand that……but what about the rest of us…..our steering shafts are wearing out too!  And there are no more of these specialized…unique components.  Some of the gurus are trying to piece the old rags back together for…..one more ride…………….terrible pic but I hop you can see this steering shaft is a hurting puppy!

Now if it can be cleaned up, relived and the boot replaced with a 2nd boot for the slip shaft then you may not have the “cartoon car” back and forth steering issuesbut if there is too much movement ….well any for that matter…….in this component it will have to be replaced.  The weakest component in your front suspension is wearing out today in record numbers…..folks are putting up with sketching steering because there is too much play in a part that is no more………

Then comes in a need for another way to skin this cat.  What to do….a problem for sure…..

Here is the solution and now comes the question……if doing a total restoration….do we change out all of these for future reliability?………From the custom hot rod industry, a “double D” to replace the outdated cv, a new DOT approved slip shaft and a universal at the bottom with collar clamps top and bottom to the original connections.

Cost?  Well being all but unavailable, this unit is a breath of fresh ait to a parts that’s been rigged in many way to keep thongs going.  The weakest steering part has been resourced!  Now do we replace ALL of these in ALL the restorations?  See its not “what to do” but rather “where to stop”.

This scenario has played out thru discovery of our Serpantine belt upgrade, aluminum fuels tanks, FiTech fuel injection , epoxy textured wall paneling, a better dash AC system……ok, you’ve got the idea.  Our restorations today are more involved and more reliable…..by virtue of the more we find to do makes that happen.

And the complexity continues…….

So for all of us Dieters and those having the maintenance part of the journey…..go to “Motorhome Rehab Ranch” and see how the other half does it.

There’s room for everyone in this community and we want to help both.  Watch as we try our ideas to make this happen.

And…….an electric GMC……..can you dig that?  We want to do it and have been working to that end.  Interested?  Post me, it will happen!

Thanks for dropping by, see ya later……………
